Orlando Pirates have made a major statement in the transfer market, striking a deal to sign Malian Ligue 1 Pro Player of the Season Abdoulaye Dine Mariko from Djoliba AC.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder inspired Djoliba to a domestic double in 2024, lifting both the West Africa Champions Cup and the Malian Super Cup. Pirates have now pounced to bring the rising star to Soweto, following up on their recent signing of his teammate and namesake, Abdoulaye Mariko, in a separate deal.

“Dine has been working on obtaining a South African Visa in Bamako after the two clubs reached an agreement,” a source close to the deal revealed.

“He plans to travel to South Africa this week, and the clubs will finalise the deal once he passes his medicals. They’ve discussed a two-year contract for the best player in Mali.”

Mariko: Mali’s golden boy set for Soweto

Named the Ligue 1 Pro Player of the Season at the 2025 Malian Football Federation awards. Dine Mariko has taken West African football by storm. His 2024/2025 season stats are a testament to his attacking prowess. 14 goals, 5 assists, and a memorable hat-trick against FC Diarra on 3 June. He ended the campaign as joint Golden Boot winner alongside Stade Malien striker Moctar Cisse.

Now, the Buccaneers will tap into his creativity and sharp eye for goal. As they prepare for the new season under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Midfield muscle: Mariko joins midfield ranks

Also joining the Sea Robbers is 23-year-old Abdoulaye Mariko. A defensive midfielder who has represented Mali at both youth and senior levels. He becomes the tenth signing of Pirates’ transfer window as the club looks to strengthen across the park.

With both Marikos set to don the famous black and white. Pirates are building a squad capable of challenging on all fronts in 2025/2026.

Final steps before the big Pirates reveal

Dine Mariko is expected in South Africa within days. Once he completes his medicals, Pirates will officially unveil him as part of their pre-season plans. The squad is already training under Ouaddou’s watchful eye and will soon depart for a pre-season camp in Spain.
