Orlando Pirates look set to appoint a familiar face from the past in Rulani Mokwena as their new coach! 

Pirates have been without a first team coach since the last bit of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Since the club announced that former coach Jose Riveiro wouldn’t renew his deal, there’s been a lot of speculation. Various names both from abroad, local and on the continent have been banded about in that regard. Whoever it was that was going to takeover, it was clear they would have a big task ahead of them. The Spanish tactician left Pirates as their most decorated coach and a solid foundation. 

During his tenure, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, Beyond that, he led the Buccaneers into a second place in the Betway Premiership. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten. 

Riveiro led Pirates to a semifinal finish in the CAF Champions League, with a Nedbank Cup final too. Now according to iDiski Times the Buccaneers are now in advanced talks with Mokwena to return and takeover?

“Talks between Orlando Pirates and Rulani Mokwena have reached an advanced stage, but with some finer details still to be ironed out. The deal was supposed to be concluded as quickly as possible to allow Mokwena to start working on his new team. The latest update we have received regarding the talks is that negotiations between Mokwena and Pirates are in advanced stages, with the 37-year old ready to take the head coach job, but finer details remain the issue with his technical team still being discussed. Mokwena is known to be wanting to bring his own technical team, like he did at Sundowns (step by step) and Wydad AC.” Wrote the publication.
