We’ve all seen it on the last day of the month. A totally unsuitable vehicle with items piled upon and tied precariously to the roof as people move house. The perfect solution would be to rent and Uber bakkie in South Africa. The mobility provider is calling it Courier Bakkie, and the service is accessible under the Uber Package section of the app, now rebranded as Uber Courier.

According to reports, the service will only be offered in the major hubs of Gauteng first. And Cape Town and Durban will follow at a later date, presumably if it shows decent uptake. Mnotho Mtshali, Senior Operations Manager for Uber Middle East and Africa says: “Introducing Uber Courier Bakkie marks a significant milestone for the company. South Africa is Uber’s first global market to offer the ability to request the delivery of heavy items up to one tonne.”

ADDITIONAL REVENUE STREAMS

Better still, the wider selection of services opens up additional earning avenues for drivers. Along with Courier Bakkie for furniture and large household applicances, the company has seen growth in the delivery of smaller items like documentation or official correspondence through its Uber Package service.

Large one-tonne bakkies will lend a helping hand to small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have delivery needs but limited resources. To ensure efficiency, Uber has teamed up with fleet partners, SkyNet Worldwide Express, to ensure valuables reach their destination safely, intact, and on time. There is no indication as yet as to how much it will cost to rent an Uber bakkie in South Africa per journey. However, if you have already utilised the service, please do share your experience with our audience below …
