Bobby Motaung claims that Kaizer Chiefs are cooking but what’s happening in the Naturena kitchen? Let’s assess it on all levels.
Kaizer Chiefs haven’t been title contenders since 2020
@TheeUltimateLee on X, back in 2023, claimed Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Motaung Jr, Jessica Motaung and co aren’t fit for the roles entrusted to them within the club by Dr Motaung Sr. It’s a bold theory, but one worth considering. Has Mr Motaung Jr achieved the objectives laid down to him as the sporting director of the Kaizer Chiefs football club? It’s doubtful. One fan said he was ‘building his legacy on a wetland.’
That theory was two years ago and fan sentiments haven’t changed.
Trophy drought continues while Kaizer Chiefs remains marketable
Chiefs fans don’t need to be reminded that the club’s last taste of silverware was the 2014-15 Betway Premiership title. What’s the plan to put that right? There doesn’t seem to be one, in truth, while family members of Dr Motaung continue to enjoy comfortable roles within the framework of one of Africa’s most popular, well-followed, easily marketable and profitable clubs.
Chiefs and Pirates are miles away from Sundowns
The Glamour Boys are 17 points off the title pace with 13 games to go, and Sundowns have a game in hand. Realistically, Nasreddine Nabi’s side will be aiming for a top-eight finish and qualification for next season’s MTN8. 2024-2025 has become another stark reminder of the gulf between Chiefs and Sundowns. The Brazilians have won the league crown for seven years running, in eight of the last nine and nine of the last 11. Orlando Pirates’ emergence this season has created flickering hope that they can be usurped, but Sundowns’ 4-1 mauling of the Buccaneers last weekend has extinguished those sparks for now. A long-term injury to key Pirates defender Thabiso Sesane makes another huge dent in their title aspirations.
Chiefs face Chippa for a place in the Nedbank Cup quarters
Inacio Miguel will skipper the Glamour Boys in their Round of 16 Nedbank Cup clash with Chippa on Saturday 15 February at 18:00. Yusuf Maart is suspended after an accumulation of yellow cards. Next up in the Betway Premiership is a meeting with former mentor Gavin Hunt and his SuperSport charges on Tuesday 18 Feb at 19:30.
Check out our predicted starting XI.
Would success in this season’s Nedbank Cup even be enough?
