A 29-year-old motorist is expected to appear before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 27 December 2024, for culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol following her arrest by Hartbeespoortdam police on Christmas day afternoon.

Five-year-old girl certified dead

According to information, the police were informed about a black Volkswagen Amarok bakkie that collided with a mother and two children in Kosmos at Simon Bekker Avenue in Hartbeespoortdam.

At the accident scene, a five-year-old girl was certified dead by the Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) paramedics.

The second victim, aged 22, who is the mother of the two children, was taken to a local hospital and admitted with serious head injuries, while the third victim, who is a baby girl, was also admitted in hospital in a serious condition.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug with a narcotic effect and culpable homicide.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng warned motorists to refrain from drinking and driving as the police and other law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to enforce the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) to ensure that those who transgress the law are dealt with accordingly as part of road safety management and Safer Festive operations.
