The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party’s deputy secretary general has apologised to traditional leaders after being accused of blocking them from meeting party leaders at the party’s anniversary event.

Speaking at a fancy dinner at Durban’s Olive Convention Centre on Monday night, Nombuso Mkhize praised the traditional leaders.

“We really appreciate the presence of traditional leaders who are the pillars of MK and custodians of our land. We also pay respect to traditional healers for their presence in this gala dinner,” said Mkhize.

Just a day earlier, she had faced anger for stopping traditional leaders from entering the VIP area at the party’s first birthday celebration. The leaders wanted to meet with party bosses.

A group called Injeje yabeNguni attacked Mkhize in public, saying she treated the chiefs like prisoners. They referred to her past job as a prison warder at the Escourt Correctional Centre.

At the dinner, Jacob Zuma celebrated the party’s growth. He also hit back at critics who had called MK fake.

“I remember one guy who said it’s fake, the same person said by the time we get to the 29 May elections Zuma will already have passed on,” said Zuma.

The event was meant to raise money for the party, with Zuma asking guests for donations, saying MK needed funds.

The dinner turned into a show of unity after Sunday’s problems, bringing together business leaders, traditional leaders and party officials under one roof.
