The renowned broadcaster Melanie and her ex-husband, musician Zwai Bala, are a living testimony that a healthy co-parenting relationship is possible if you fix your eyes on the people who matter the most, the children.

Melanie, who has been divorced from Zwai for nearly a decade, recently made an appearance on Relebogile Mabotja’s Podcast, where she candidly spoke about her relationship with the singer and their unconditional love for their children.

The couple tied the knot in 2008 but later fell short of reaching the decade mark after failing to become “the best versions” of themselves in their relationship.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement shared at the time, they noted, “We remain committed to jointly raising our amazing children in a happy and healthy environment and will continue to be great friends.”

Fast forward to the current day, and they have certainly maintained this promise. Speaking about how they were able to achieve this, Mel, as she is affectionately referred to, confessed that while a divorce may be an emotional rollercoaster, their main priority remained their children.

“These kids didn’t ask for this. And so I choose not to make them have to pick sides, or talk badly about their father, or cut off their entire family that they’ve known their whole lives,” she explained.

“I feel like co-parenting works if the two people no longer have feelings for each other, or if you don’t hate each other. When all those feelings are resolved, you can truly co-parent. It really works when you are emotionally mature, and you have truly ended and completed that part of your relationship, so that you are only co-parents.”
