As 2024 matric pupils anxiously await their exam results, here’s a reminder of who came out tops in the 2023 matric class.

Melissa Muller from Rhenish Girls’ High School in Stellenbosch was named as the best performing matric learner in the country.
Muller placed first out of 717 377 learners who sat for the matric exams in late 2023.
She confirmed at the time that her plan was to study mechatronics engineering at the University of Stellenbosch.
Muller, who played first team waterpolo and hockey for her school, had some words of advice for the class of 2024.
Here’s hoping they listened!
“Enjoy your year, it’s a jam-packed year. It will get overwhelming, have a support system, your family, ask them for help when needed. I think also stay up to date with your school work, it will help you identify problem areas early on, which will help you avoid the stress of cramming the night before exams.
“My family were very supportive because I get very stressed out during exams and my mom was always checking if I am okay and if I needed anything.”
Muller added that she had incredible support at school as well.
Rhenish Girls’ High School was founded in 1860, making it the oldest girls’ school in South Africa.
It was the second year in a row that the best performing student attended a Western Cape school after Rustenburg Girls’ High School’s Kelly Grace Prowse came out tops in Quintile 5 in 2022, as reported by The South African website.

The DBE has announced that the 2024 matric result release date is Monday, 13 January 2025.
This decision aligns with the start of the 2025 academic year, scheduled for Wednesday, 15 January 2025.
Here’s a detailed timeline:
- Monday, 13 January 2025: The Department of Basic Education will announce the results nationally
- Tuesday, 14 January 2025: Individual matric results will be available at schools and online via official DBE platforms
