The Matric Class of 2024 has made history with an impressive pass rate of 87.3%, the highest ever recorded in South Africa. This milestone was officially announced by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, during the release of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on Monday night.
Over 800,000 candidates, both full-time and part-time, sat for the NSC exams in 2024. The 87.3% pass rate marks a significant increase from the 82.9% recorded in 2023. Notably, all provinces surpassed an 84% pass rate, a remarkable improvement from the 75% recorded in 2023.
The Free State maintained its position as the top-performing province for the sixth consecutive year with a 91% pass rate, up from 89% in 2023. KwaZulu-Natal followed closely with an 89% pass rate, improving from 86.4% in the previous year. Historically, the top-performing provinces have included Free State, Gauteng, and the Western Cape, but KwaZulu-Natal’s outstanding performance this year stands out.
KwaZulu-Natal also led in the number of Bachelor passes and distinctions, followed by the Western Cape and Gauteng. The strong performance across the board reflects the efforts of learners, educators, and provincial departments to raise the standard of education nationwide.
Earlier in the day, Umalusi, South Africa’s quality assurance body for education, gave its stamp of approval for the 2024 results. Umalusi chairperson Professor Yunus Ballim confirmed that the exams were conducted in accordance with established regulations, with no systemic irregularities or paper leakages reported. The integrity of the exams was further ensured by rigorous measures, including oversight by the State Security Agency during the handling of question papers.
This record-breaking achievement is a testament to the resilience and dedication of South African learners and educators, setting a new benchmark for excellence in education.
