Former Miss Universe South Africa winner Margaret Gardiner has responded to Mia le Roux’s withdrawal from the competition.

Margaret Gardiner who joined the 2024 judging panel for the Miss Universe pageant took to her Instagram on Friday, 14 November to wish Mia le Roux a speedy recovery.

“Wishing @mialeroux a speedy recovery. So proud of you @official_misssa @missuniverse,” she wrote.

Good Things Guy reports that Gardiner made history when she became the first South African to win the Miss Universe crown back in the late 70s, when she was still a teenager.

Now, decades later, she will be judging a new generation of Miss Universe hopefuls in the very same country where she won her crown in Mexico.

MISS SA: ‘MIA LE ROUX WITHDRAWS’

Miss SA confirmed on Friday, 15 November that Mia le Roux has withdrawn from the Miss Universe competition in Mexico due to health concerns.

“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed on me. However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so I may continue to serve my country with full strength,” Le Roux said.

The organisation said Le Roux has shown “incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period”. 

“Her health and wellbeing are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health. Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery.”
