Polokwane City FC goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga has reflected on his stay at the club after reaching a significant milestone.
Sapunga clocked 50 appearances as Polokwane City FC’s trusted number one, a feat that has left him hoping for better strides.
The Equatorial Guinea goalminder is one of the foreign keepers that are enjoying game time at both club and national team level.
Marumo Gallants’ Washington Arubi and Fiacre Ntwari of Kaizer Chiefs have also been regulars for their respective clubs and countries.
This season, Sapunga has managed to keep three clean sheets in the seven Betway Premiership matches he played in PLK City colours.
What excites him is how coach Phuti Mohafe has retained faith in him despite intense competition in the team. As such, the 32-year-old has reflected on his roller coaster of a journey at the modest Polokwane City FC.
WHAT SAPUNGA SAID AFTER HIS 50-GAME MILESTONE IN THE PSL
In an interview with FARPost, Sapunga said: “I’m grateful for the opportunity that Polokwane City has given me as a player. They have given me hope for brighter days.
“Now, I have played 50 games for them and in my mind, I know it was not easy. PSL is a very competitive and tough league, and South African football is top-notch.
“I am improving every day and every match. We are working very hard, more than last season. Everyone has a reason to fight harder this season. I’m enjoying my stay at the club.
“The most important thing for me was to join the South African league. Polokwane gave me that chance to take the PSL.
“So my task has been to show the good part of my abilities and what I have. Polokwane gave me the chance. I respect them for it. For me, I don’t think Polokwane is still considered to be a small team; I think we are challenging all those big fish.
“And today, we are in a good position. We are improving. Our ambition is to be better than last season. We are no longer a team of the bottom,” added Sapunga.
