Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok suffered a serious head injury on 8 December and was stretched off the field during the Stomers’ Champions Cup clash against Toulon.
The European giants won 24-14 against the Stormers during the Investec Champions Cup opener at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
MANIE LIBBOK’S FIRST POST AFTER NASTY HEAD INJURY TRENDS
However, the game was marred with several injuries, with Manie Libbok’s head injury being the most worrying.
On the other hand, flanker Feke Morabe and Ben-Jason Dixon are some of the players on the Stomers’ injury list.
After the game, Stormers coach John Dobson said, “Manie is very bad—he’s gone to hospital. With a normal concussion, you don’t go straight to hospital…”
The publication has since established that Libbok and Morabe were taken to a hospital in Gqeberha for observation.
However, confirmed reports have it that the two were discharged after the observations. Rumour mill said they returned to the team hotel on Saturday evening.
The club issued a key update regarding the injuries.
Part of the statement reads, “Manie Libbok, Keke Morabe, and Ben-Jason Dixon all travelled back to Cape Town with the Stormers squad on Sunday after leaving the field with injuries in the Champions Cup game against RC Toulon at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.”
However, Libbok and Dixon will be reassessed after 12 days as per HIA protocols.
However, Manie Libbok has since taken to Instagram to thank fans for their messages of support. He has been topping trends against the post thanks to his social media following.
Taking to the picture-sharing app, Manie Libbok shared photos and captioned them, “Appreciate the messages of support—grateful and blessed to keep going.”
A STRING OF INJURIES
However, little is known about when Manie Libbok will return to action. The Stormers have been marred with a string of injuries.
Salmaan Moerat, Sti Sithole, Frans Malherbe, Deon Fourie, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu are notable names expected to return before year-end.
However, Steven Kitshoff, Evan Roos, Dan du Plessis, Ben Loader and Damian Willemse are all expected to return next year. As of now, they all continue with their rehab.
Speaking to the media on the Stormers injury woes, Dobson said, “If you look at the nature of the injuries … we’re not doing soft tissue injuries, it’s trauma injuries.”
