Mama Joy – real name Joy Chauke – has been branded “opportunistic” after she attempted to turn the attention from Tito Mboweni’s death onto herself.
The sports supporter recently came under fire over a viral video that showed her “pushing” a child out of her camera shot during Bafana Bafana’s televised match over the weekend.
South Africa’s superfan – who recently tied the knot to her French husband – has also courted controversy for accepting government-funded trips to high-profile tournaments.
Following his death, Lucky Star Pilchards – which falls under Tiger Brands – paid tribute to Tito Mboweni, who was branded their unofficial ambassador.
The tinned fish company said in a statement, “We lost a true South African Icon.”
In the comment section, Mama Joy shared images of herself preparing a meal with the brand. The move was seen as “disrespectful” by many South Africans, who accused the sports fan of trying to capitalise on Tito’s death.
@Range888888: “That’s being very disrespectful and opportunistic. Sies! Can you just have some decency?”
@SirRoyzen: “That’s pathetic. Taking advantage of Tito Mboweni’s death”.
@Aimyel_n: “First, trying to grab the attention of the camera by pushing a boy’s poster down. Now this? You really feel everything revolves around you?”
@Bantu_Istan: “Reading the room is a skill you don’t seem to have.”
Mama Joy later backtracked by claiming that Tito Mboweni had inspired her to start cooking pilchards.
Chauke then tagged Lucky Star, claiming she was starting a “challenge” in Tito’s name.
DID MAMA JOY TRY TO STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT AGAIN?
