Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel and Ernst Roets should lead by example and join the Afrikaners who resettled as refugees in the United States.
Malema said this as he addressed scores of EFF members after a successful march from the Union Buildings to National Treasury celebrating the party’s role in the reversal of the VAT hike proposed during the 2025 National Budget.
WILL KALLIE KRIEL JOIN OTHER AFRIKANER REFUGEES IN THE US?
Earlier this year, lobby group AfriForum and other organisations travelled to the US to complain about farm murders and that their culture is under threat and targeted in South Africa.
The group said it met with influential individuals in the Trump administration and called for sanctions against the liberation movement African National Congress (ANC) leaders while denouncing progressive laws passed to redress the inequalities of the past.
Last Monday, a group of 49 Afrikaners, including children, left South Africa on Sunday, 11 May, and landed in the US on Monday, 12 May. This, after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order granting white farmers asylum, falsely saying they were being persecuted, and the South African government was confiscating their land and farms without compensation.
Despite the South African government disputing the genocide myth several times, even through diplomatic channels, Trump insists that Afrikaners are under persecution in South Africa.
During his address on Monday, Malema said Kriel and Roets will not go to America because they lead a good life in South Africa.
“Why is Kriel not going to America because he’s the one who said people are being killed. Kriel must lead by example and go to America, [Ernst] Roets must lead by example and go to America, Gerrie Nel must lead by example and go to America.
“They can’t go because they live a good life here in South Africa and when they go to America they will become hobos with immediate effect,” he said.
Malema said since the 49 Afrikaners were said to be farmers, they want the addresses of the farms they left behind, so they will make a plan for them.
RAMAPHOSA SET TO MEET WITH TRUMP
Julius Malema’s statement about why AfriForum bosses haven’t joined other Afrikaner refugees comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to meet with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, 21 May at the White House.
The Presidency said the purpose of the visit is to reset and revitalise bilateral relations between South Africa and the United States. In this regard, the visit will focus specifically on reframing bilateral, economic and commercial relations.
Ramaphosa is accompanied by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister of Trade, Industry Competition Parks Tau, Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen and Special Envoy to the United States of America Mcebisi Jonas.
