Major South African petrol station launches digital tipping

Sasol is rolling out a new digital tipping solution across its forecourts in South Africa following a successful pilot programme at select locations.

The service, known as ‘Tipped’, allows customers to tip pump attendants using their smartphones, making the process quicker and easier.

How it works

Tipped is a digital tipping and payment solution intended for service workers to receive gratuities from visitors.

The system uses a QR code that petrol attendants can present to consumers while they are at the pump.

A driver can then scan the QR code with their smart device, which allows them to pay a tip directly from a digital wallet.

Tipped operates on the Masterpass payment rail and supports mobile banking apps from most major banks in South Africa, as well as digital wallet services like SnapScan, Zapper, Spot, Telkom Pay, and VodaPay.

Forecourt staff are required to present proof of identification before they can join the Tipped onboarding process, after which they can use the associated smartphone app to transfer money to their bank accounts and enjoy cashback rewards at affiliated stores.

One benefit of the virtual payment system is that it reduces cash flow at fuel stations, which puts staff at risk of criminal activities.

Tipped is a local female-owned technology startup that aims to improve the earnings for individuals employed across the formal and informal service sectors in South Africa.

According to Tipped CEO, Kimlynn Temple, staff who have used the service have seen gratuity payments go up by an average of almost 40%.

Sasol will be the exclusive fuel station partner of Tipped for the next year, which is expected to greatly improve the reach of the local business.
