- Banele Majingo dumped all his ANC roles, saying his values now match those of the DA.
- But the ANC says he’s trying to save his job before being booted over a candidate scandal.
Banele Majingo has walked away from the ANC and straight into the arms of the DA.
The former leader of the opposition in the Dullah Omar region shocked party members by resigning from all his positions and saying he was now backing the DA.
Majingo said the decision wasn’t easy but he felt the DA better represented his values.
“I stand before you with a heavy heart, torn between my loyalty to the organisation that has been my home for so long and my conviction that it is time for me to take a different path,” he said in his resignation letter.
Majingo gave up his roles as an ANC councillor, Branch Executive member and Demarcation Task Team manager.
He thanked the ANC for the experience and growth it gave him but said he now believes in the DA’s push for clean governance and jobs.
“I am increasingly impressed with their commitment to deliver for poor residents and the unemployed,” he said.
He insisted that leaving the ANC wasn’t about rejecting its values but about using a new platform to serve the country.
But the ANC isn’t buying it.
The party said it respects Majingo’s choice but claimed the move was more about fear than principle.
“Councillor Majingo has been implicated in the Kgalema report, which raised serious concerns about a rigged candidate selection process within the ANC,” it said.
The party said it had already asked the provincial leadership to review his position and was in the process of removing him.
The ANC accused Majingo of trying to avoid being kicked out by jumping ship and keeping his council salary.
“His resignation is not a principled stand. It’s a calculated move to hold onto power,” said the ANC.
Still, they see his departure as a blessing in disguise.
“This is a Godsend. Wrongdoers are beginning to walk away as we clean up the party,” the ANC said.
