Chairman of Carling Knockout Cup finalists Magesi FC, Solly Makhubela, has addressed the question of player ‘incentives’ ahead of the eagerly awaited final on Saturday in the Free State province.

The Limpopo club is set to take on Mamelodi Sundowns at the Toyota Stadium in Mangaung on Saturday.

Magesi FC, the surprise package of the season, are set to make history. This will be their debut in a top-flight cup final, a remarkable achievement considering their recent promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship under the guidance of experienced coach Clinton Larsen.

The Polokwane-based side has defied expectations, knocking out formidable opponents such as Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy, and Richards Bay FC to reach the final. As they prepare to face Sundowns, Magesi FC is eager to write a new chapter in their club’s history.

The winner of this year’s tournament will pocket R6.85 million, with the runner-up walking away with R2.85 million.

WILL MAGESI FC PLAYERS GET SOME INCENTIVES FOR WINNING THE CARLING KNOCKOUT CUP FINAL?

When the Magesi boss, Makhubela, was asked if there would be incentives to motivate the players ahead of the match, this is what the chairman had to say: “Normally, when you want to surprise your own child, you don’t say it.

“So you’d rather keep the carrots, but you know the carrots will be there,” explained Makhubela, referring to why he has kept that [bonus matter] to himself.

“If you say to your child if you pass, I give you this is not the same as if you say my boy if you pass, you’ll see my colour if I’m your father or I’m not your father.”

WHY SOLLY MAKHUBELA PREFERS TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY

“Normally this thing I don’t prefer, other people prefer it. But you know, sometimes these things you promise, and you didn’t talk to the technical team, you didn’t talk to the management, you didn’t sit together, and you are taking a decision,” he said.

“At the end of the day, when something is not going right, they come at the back and say to you, but you have decided alone, but you said the team belongs to us. Why didn’t you sit with us?”

Makhubela was speaking during a send-off ceremony organised by the Limpopo Tourism Agency at Meropa Casino on Thursday. The match between Magesi and Sundowns will kick off at 18:00.
