uMhlanga: DA ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh is threatening to take the city to court over plans to build a taxi rank on 31 Autumn Drive in uMhlanga. The eThekwini Transport Association wants to build the rank north of Durban, but the DA says the location is completely wrong for such a project. “uMhlanga residents have made their position clear: this taxi rank is badly planned and will hurt traffic flow, safety, and local businesses. The huge number of complaints shows the community is united against this plan. If the city ignores what people want, we’ll have no choice but to take legal action,” Singh said.

Jozini: Police arrested four pupils for violence, attacking officers and damaging property during protests outside a school on Wednesday morning. High school pupils from two schools marched to a non-protesting school and started violent demonstrations at the gate. During the protests, pupils threw stones at a police car and attacked officers. Four pupils aged 18 to 20 were arrested but later released to their parents.

Pietermaritzburg: The court case about ANC President Chief Albert Luthuli’s death has been postponed to 13 and 16 October. On Wednesday, the state told the High Court it had finished calling witnesses. Chief Luthuli, born in 1898, became a public figure in 1937 when he was made chief of the Zulu tribe in Groutville. He joined the ANC in 1944 and later became its president. He organised protests against apartheid with Nelson Mandela, including the 1952 Defiance Campaign. The apartheid government called him a terrorist and took away his title. Luthuli died in 1967 in a train accident that is now at the centre of the court case.
