Ethekwini – The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has rejected rumours that it wanted its embattled eThekwini regional secretary Musa Nciki to step aside this week because of his arrest for possessing an unlicensed vehicle and reckless driving. The ANC described the rumours as gossip. Nciki has been at loggerheads with KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo and is accused of plotting to unseat him. He is also accused of being the least successful ANC secretary of eThekwini since he took office.

Manguzi – A patient died when an ambulance bus hit a cow on the road and overturned. The bus, transporting 60 patients and two crew members, came from the Nakekela Hub in Manguzi and hit the cow near Mbazwana in the uMkhanyakude district. The KZN health department says the patient who died was trapped in the wrecked vehicle. The other passengers and two crew members sustained minor injuries and were transported to eMseleni Hospital. In a second incident, an EMS vehicle transporting two injured minors from Itshelejuba Hospital to Ngwelezane Hospital also overturned after hitting a stray cow.  No injuries were sustained by the staff, patients, or their relatives.

Dumbe – Police and the eDumbe (Paulpietersburg) municipality in northern KZN had to break into the spaza shop of a foreign national who had locked himself inside as he attempted to escape from police and municipal officials who were inspecting stores. The inspection comes as community members in various parts of KZN complain about expired food allegedly sold by many spaza shops owned by foreign nationals.

Nongoma – Two taxi drivers, Sipho Mahlambi and Mtho Mthethwa, were shot and killed on Friday morning at Onyango village, which has been the scene of ongoing faction fights that have led to the death of many in the community. Last week, KZN Cooperative Governance MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi held a community meeting to urge an end to the violence that has disrupted schooling and forced some residents to sleep in the bushes out of fear for their lives.

Inanda – Two suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder, house robbery and robbery with a firearm were shot and fatally wounded during a confrontation with police in the Namibia area of Inanda in the early hours of Friday. The SAP’s Murder Task Team members acted on intelligence about the suspects’ hideout. When they introduced themselves as police officers, the suspects fired at them. The police shot back, and the two suspects were killed. The robbery and attempted murder cases were all committed in the Inanda area this month, and the murder was committed in June.
