‘Komphela promised me a Ranger Rover if I scored 13 goals’ – Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese revealed that current Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela promised to give him a Range Rover car during his days at Amakhosi.

Both Lebese and Komphela worked together from 2015 until 2018 at Chiefs. The retired footballer said his relationship with the former Golden Arrows had always been good.

“My relationship with coach Steve was good and it still is good. As to why I did not play, I have no clue why I did not play under him.

“But he is a great human being, we just have that one misunderstanding of playing time until this day,” Lebese told Robert Marawa on 947.

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star says he is still close with Komphela

Lebese said he would like to know from the Downs coach why he didn’t feature regularly at Chiefs under him.

“We’ve never resolved that issue, even after because we spoke a lot after Kaizer Chiefs and I still don’t understand – I don’t know… I’d also like to know,” he added.

“It is quite funny because when coach Steve came in, I was one of the players he called to the office and he told me how he would like to play, how he’d like me to play and I would be the main part of his team that season.

The former Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite said Komphela promised to give him a Range Rover if he scored 13 goals but the former winger never got close to scoring the number of goals.

“I don’t know if he was joking, but he told me that ‘If you scored a certain amount of goals, I am going to give you my car’, the Ranger Rover… that’s what he said.

“It was less than 15 goals, about 13 goals or something like that. I asked him ‘Are you sure because it’s a whole car?’, and he said yes. But how am I going to get the car if I am not playing?

“Then things turned sour and I don’t know what happened to be honest. I was not playing and I was too far from [from that target] but I was scoring, I scored headers which is not my strongest point but I scored because I wanted the car,” Lebese said.

After leaving Kaizer Chiefs in 2019, Lebese and Komphela reunited at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Do you think Komphela was going to give Lebese a Range Rover?
