The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) rescued Josh Sullivan, a 45-year-old American pastor, on Tuesday 15 April after his kidnapping in Gqeberha last week.

Police Track Down Suspects to Safe House

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba, a joint tactical team launched the operation after receiving verified intelligence about the pastor’s whereabouts.

The team included members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team, and other law enforcement partners.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, confirmed the rescue took place at a house identified as a suspected safe house in KwaMagxaki.

Gunfire Erupts as Suspects Try to Escape

As officers arrived at the property, they saw a vehicle in the yard. When they moved in, the suspects inside allegedly tried to flee and opened fire on the police.

A shootout followed, and officers fatally wounded all three suspects during the exchange.

Hawks officers found the kidnapped pastor inside the same vehicle. He remained unharmed and received immediate medical attention.

Officers confirmed he is in excellent condition.

Praise for Police Teamwork

Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, the Hawks’ Provincial Head in the Eastern Cape, praised the officers for their courage, discipline, and tactical precision under fire.

He also acknowledged the support of senior government officials during the operation.

“This operation highlights the power of coordination and swift action in addressing organised crime,” said Ngwenya.

In a statement, the Hawks added: “We extend our appreciation to all role players – including law enforcement members, the public, and international partners – whose support was instrumental in this success. We also request privacy for the victim and his family during this time of recovery.”

Public Asked to Assist Investigation

The Hawks have not yet released the names of the suspects. They confirmed that investigations are ongoing and have appealed to the public for assistance.
