Today’s Kaizer Chiefs news wrap features comments from club legend Itumeleng Khune and Mdu Shabalala’s Orlando Pirates secret.
Khune likes Kaizer Chiefs star Saile, but…
Chippa United and SuperSport have both expressed an interest in Kaizer Chiefs’ out-of-favour Congolese attacker Christian Saile. Itumeleng Khune rates him as a player but feels he’ll thrive away from the fish bowl-pressurized environment of Naturena. One fan in the comments section of a recent article from The South African article claimed Chiefs would be lucky to get R50 for him. An exaggeration, sure, but we get the point he was trying to make. 25-year-old Saile has flattered to deceive since his move from Nchange Rangers in January 2023. Seven goals and four assists in 56 appearances is hardly setting the world alight.
Mduduzi Shabalala’s Orlando Pirates secret
20-year-old Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mduduzi Shabalala revealed he grew up supporting Orlando Pirates but says now he will “die a Chiefs fan”.
The Amakhosi youth development talent is already a part of the furniture at the club. ‘Mdu’, as he is affectionately known, worshipped Thembinkosi Lorch when growing up in an all-Pirates household. With Lorch having moved on to Sundowns, there’s space in the fixture for another star to make a name for himself in South Africa’s premier club fixture.
Soweto Derby: All you need to know
Pirates have held the upper hand in recent meetings between these great Soweto rivals. The Buccaneers have won the last three meetings across all competitions, including each of the last two in the league, most recently that 3-2 success for the Sea Robbers with Saleng bagging a double. That stopped a curious and somewhat surprising run of five consecutive wins for Chiefs in Soweto Derby league clashes with the Sea Robbers. These rivals lock horns again on 01 February at Orlando Stadium. Will Mdu decorate the occasion or will it be Pirates’ day of glory once more?
Will Chiefs recruit the right players in January?
