Kaizer Chiefs’ identify urgent transfer priority, as head coach Nasreddine Nabi targets a key position for future success.
Nabi has identified a critical area that demands immediate strengthening when the transfer window reopens in July. Determined to restore Amakhosi to their former glory, Nabi believes a specialist left-back is essential for the squad’s success.
Nabi’s mission to end Chiefs’ trophy drought
Nabi faces a monumental task in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as he aims to end Chiefs’ decade-long wait for silverware. The club’s last major triumph dates back to the 2014/2015 season, leaving fans eager for a resurgence. His arrival from Moroccan side AS FAR ahead of the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership season has ignited hope among Amakhosi supporters.
Committed to assembling a competitive squad, Nabi emphasized the importance of recruiting top-quality players. During the January transfer window, Kaizer Chiefs secured Thabo Cele, Tashreeq Morris, and Glody Lilepo to bolster their roster. These signings wasted no time integrating into the team, featuring in the club’s last two league matches against AmaZulu and Stellenbosch.
Left-back reinforcement: A top priority
Despite the recent additions, Nabi has made it clear that Chiefs still lack a specialist left-back. The current options—Bradley Cross, Edmilson Dove, Bongani Sam and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, who is close to leaving. They have filled the role, but Nabi believes a natural left-back will provide the tactical balance the team needs.
“We need to build a tactical culture in the team, and every time there’s an opportunity in the transfer window to strengthen the squad, we use it,” Nabi stated.
He acknowledged Cross’s impressive performances but emphasized the need for a true specialist:
“The one that plays there [Bradley Cross], although he plays amazingly well, he is someone who was there at first to try him and see how he does, but overall, we believe that going to the end of the season, we are in the right space with the right ingredients to do something good.”
Potential targets: Who could fill the void?
Before signing Cross and Sam, Chiefs were heavily linked with Stellies’ star Fawaaz Basadien and Petro de Luanda’s Anderson Cruz. With the upcoming transfer window, speculation around these targets is likely to intensify.
Nabi’s vision is clear: building a team that can dominate South African football once again. If Chiefs secure the right left-back, they could finally take a significant step towards reclaiming their former dominance.
