Kaizer Chiefs to relight Asenele Velebayi interest?

Kaizer Chiefs were adamant about signing Bafana youngster Asenele Velebayi last offseason.

The 22-year-old winger is one of South Africa’s hottest prospects yet finds himself at the bottom of the National First Division, playing for the dilapidated Cape Town Spurs.

The Mother City outfit have placed an R10 million price tag on Velebayi, who had interest from Sekhukhune United, as well as Kaizer Chiefs.

AmaKhosi are yet to reignite their interest in the Cape Town native, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they try again in the offseason.

What does the future hold for Velebayi?

Velebayi will undoubtedly be restless at Spurs, feeling his talents are being wasted while his peers, Wandile Duba and Relebohile Mofokeng, go from strength to strength in the Betway Premiership.

The Spurs forward is waiting for his chance to shine on the big stage, saying, “As an individual, I aim to break into Bafana Bafana. Seeing Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng makes me feel that as youngsters, we are not far.

“I believe that is a big platform for me. We all want to rise, but it’s a process. As a player, the goal is to grow and be a Bafana player. But when interests from bigger teams come, we must be able to deal with the level of attention,” he added.

Velebayi’s failed move to Kaizer Chiefs has not derailed him this season despite playing in the lower division. He said he was inspired by young players such as ex-teammate Rushwin Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng.

“I envy what they (Mofokeng and Dortley) are doing at club and national team, and it is something that I also hope to do.”
