Kaizer Chiefs’ Three Biggest Issues

Kaizer Chiefs endured another setback over the weekend.

Following an impressive midweek display against Richards Bay, Nasreddine Nabi’s side looked set to build on their momentum when they faced Royal AM on November 30, and that seemed to be the case for fifty-one minutes.

Two goals in the game’s opening quarter sent Kaizer Chiefs ultras into dreamland, but an Ayabulela Mawele goal with under thirty minutes left soon sobered them up.

Now was the time for Kaizer Chiefs to prove the critics wrong, but a Levy Mashiane goal at the last minute of regular time only stamped their judgements: the Soweto giants are still struggling.

Three problems AmaKhosi face

Three areas need to be addressed at Kaizer Chiefs’ headquarters – the first being their discipline.

The Glamour Boys are frequent offenders. New signing Inacio Miguel has faced two suspensions in his first two months at the club, while Reeve Frosler nearly cost AmaKhosi dearly following a red card against Richards Bay last week Wednesday.

Then there’s the captaincy dilemma. Skipper Yusuf Maart has had a lacklustre start to the season, being subbed off in most games and looking likely to be starting on the bench if his poor form continues.

Having a high-performing captain week-in-week-out is crucial to how a team operates. They are the glue of the team, communicating constantly to ensure seamless transitions – this becomes harder to achieve when they are one of the first to be benched each game.

Another issue that will take time to resolve is the number of new personnel that have arrived at Kaizer Chiefs’ village over the past few months, from coaches like Cedric Kaze and Nabi to seven signings, including Bradley Cross, Inacio Miguel and Gaston Sirino.

The players still need time to adjust to their new surroundings and the coach’s way of doing things it is always going to take a moment for them to solidify as a unit, and when that day comes, it could send shockwaves throughout the PSL.
