Kaizer Chiefs start with mind games before the blockbuster final.

With the Nedbank Cup final looming, the tension between Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates is building fast. In a tightly controlled press briefing, Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze gave a subtle squad update, just enough to stir curiosity without revealing too much.

Kaizer Chiefs keep cards close to chest

Representing Amakhosi in the pre-match press conference, Kaze confirmed one key returnee while leaving the rest of the lineup shrouded in mystery.

“In this coming game we’re only going to have Duba who is coming back from suspension,” Kaze stated.

“Minus Cross, who is suspended from the last game. Other than that you’ll have to find out on the field.”

Wandile Duba’s return from suspension boosts the Chiefs’ attacking options, while Bradley Cross will sit out due to his red card in the previous match. Beyond those two names, Kaze left reporters guessing.

Pirates’ Ncikazi warns of tactical twists

Mandla Ncikazi, speaking for Orlando Pirates, acknowledged the psychological and tactical challenges of facing the same opponent twice in quick succession, especially after a win.

“It’s always not easy to prepare for an opponent that you’ve just played, especially when the result went in your favour,” Ncikazi noted.

He hinted at possible changes from Kaizer Chiefs, especially as players return from injury.

“Chiefs got some players that are coming from injury, which is a possibility that they might use like my fellow coach [Kaze] has indicated.

They might be tempted to change the strategy. But what becomes important is to focus on your own strength, that you’re going to try and impose on the opponents.”

All eyes on the cup: Strategy over history

With the historic Soweto Derby adding weight to the fixture, Ncikazi emphasized the importance of living in the moment.

“It’s a cup final, the history is not important, it’s whether you win it or lose it.”

As fans count down to the clash, both camps remain tight-lipped but highly focused. Chiefs may be hiding a few surprises, and Pirates are preparing for every possibility. One thing is certain, this cup final won’t be short on drama.
