Increasingly, it seems certain that this will be viewed as another failed season for Kaizer Chiefs as ongoing inconsistency threatens to see the Glamour Boys drop out of the top eight in the league, and miss out out on the MTN8 again.
Chiefs are precariously placed in eighth spot as it stands, but the likes of Chippa United and Golden Arrows are hot on their heels.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi is coming under increasing pressure, and it really is the response from the team over the next few weeks that could determine if his position remains tenable.
Ahead of this Saturday’s Premiership clash against TS Galaxy, Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele admitted that a club in ‘crisis’ needs to start setting things right.
“For sure for Chiefs to be sitting where we are is not nice,” Cele told a press conference at Naturena, as quoted by The Citizen.
“You can call it a crisis. Even us, as a team, we feel we can do way better and we are working on that. Eventually something is going to come if we just keep working and believing in what we are doing. There are many positives that we can see, it is just a matter of being consistent and getting results.”
Kaizer Chiefs still hoping for redemption this season
The Nedbank Cup remains Kaizer Chiefs’ only shot at avoiding going a full decade without silverware, but mighty Mamelodi Sundowns stand in their way at the semi-final stage.
“Clearly the Nedbank Cup is very important, for us, for the fans, for our families and for the club. But we have a very important game on Saturday and that is a game we have to win,” Cele commented. “That is what we are focusing on.”
On the injury front, Cele himself is still being assessed after recently picking up a niggle.
“Obviously, you saw in the game I had some discomfort on my calf. But it’s something that we’ve been monitoring with the technical team. I’m going to see how I train.”
