Kaizer Chiefs star defender Thatayaone “TT” Ditlhokwe is set to leave the Soweto giants for a lucrative move to Libyan powerhouse Al Ittihad in a deal worth approximately R15.7 million.

The 26-year-old Botswana international has been a key figure for Amakhosi this season, making 11 appearances and registering two assists in the Betway Premiership. While traditionally a centre-back, Ditlhokwe has played predominantly as a left-back under coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Signed on a four-year contract from SuperSport United on January 19, 2023, Ditlhokwe initially faced speculation about his future. The arrival of Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross led to rumors of his potential departure. However, he chose to fight for his place and ultimately cemented himself as a starter ahead of Cross.

Why are Chiefs letting Ditlhokwe go?

Despite his growing influence in the squad, Chiefs appear ready to cash in on Ditlhokwe, given that they signed him as a free agent. His departure aligns with Nabi’s initial plans, as the coach reportedly intended to offload him before the season began. However, when Cross struggled to settle, Nabi turned to Ditlhokwe, who delivered reliable performances.

Now, with the Libyan giants showing interest, Chiefs are prepared to negotiate a deal that could see the defender stay in North Africa until June 2027.

Al Ittihad’s ambitious moves

The 19-time Libyan Premier League champions are making waves in the transfer market. Ditlhokwe will reunite with his Botswana national teammate Tumisang Orebonye, who recently joined from AS FAR Rabat in a R9.2 million deal. The Tripoli-based club has also secured Egyptian striker Mahmoud Kahraba from Al Ahly.

Currently sitting fourth in the Libya West Group standings, Al Ittihad is strengthening its squad to reclaim domestic dominance and compete in continental competitions.

Chiefs’ left-back dilemma

If Ditlhokwe departs, Nabi will have to rely on Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane at left-back. The coach has already expressed concerns about squad depth in that position.

“If there is an opportunity or a transfer window that allows us to strengthen the team, we feel we are in the right direction even if we were not consistent,” said Nabi.

“We should have had a left-back that is a specialist in his position. The one who plays there – even though he performs amazingly well – was tried out of necessity.”

Ditlhokwe’s legacy at Chiefs

Despite facing limited opportunities earlier in the season, Ditlhokwe has proven his worth. His first appearance under Nabi came on November 2, 2024, stepping in when Inacio received a red card against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout. Since then, he has made eight starts across all competitions, gradually making the left-back position his own.

Beyond club football, Ditlhokwe has left his mark on the international stage. Appointed Botswana captain at just 21, he led the Zebras to only their second-ever AFCON qualification, playing a pivotal role throughout the campaign.

As negotiations between Chiefs and Al Ittihad continue, the move appears increasingly likely. With Amakhosi known for allowing players to pursue better career opportunities. Ditlhokwe’s time in South Africa could be coming to an end.
