Kaizer Chiefs set to sign Basadien by sacrificing veteran defender?

Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of Fawaaz Basadien has been no secret.

Orlando Pirates are also after the 28-year-old defender, making negotiations more tedious, but AmaKhosi could have a trick up their sleeve.

Long-serving left-back Happy Mashiane, who has only featured four times this season, including an impressive outing against the Maroons on January 8, looks set to move as Kaizer Chiefs seek ways to free up cash flow.

“Chiefs will be willing to allow Happy Mashiane to move, especially if they succeed in getting some of their targets,’ SoccerLaduma confirmed.

“The boy has been unlucky with lack of game, but he remains one of the best for his position. Stellenbosch is monitoring his situation.”

The last sentence suggests that Chiefs could use Mashiane, who joined the club in 2019, as a sweetener in the Basadien deal, upping their odds of signing the Stellenbosch sensation.

However, this will be no easy task as Orlando Pirates are bartering with forward Zakhele Lepasa.

The Stellenbosch star has acknowledged the rumours surrounding a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, but remains focused on his job for Steve Barker, saying, “I mean I’m there to do a job, never mind what’s going on around the media,

“Obviously, it’s good to have a club like Chiefs interested in you but I’m contracted to Stellenbosch and my focus has been there by Stellenbosch and just to put in good performances, week in and week out.”
