Kaizer Chiefs’ roller coaster start explained under new head coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Chiefs ended 2024 on a high note as Nabi guided the team to a 1-0 victory over Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The win, which included their first clean sheet of the season, propelled Chiefs into the top eight of the Betway Premiership standings.
Nabi has placed faith in young talent, and Mduduzi Shabalala has emerged as a standout performer. With four goals and two assists, Shabalala is enjoying his best season since his promotion to the senior team. His tally matches the total goals he scored across the last two seasons combined. Another rising star, Wandile Duba, has also impressed, contributing two goals—an improvement on his single goal from last season.
Mthethwa’s resurgence boosts midfield
Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s return to form has been a bright spot for Chiefs. After struggling for game time early in the season, Mthethwa seized his opportunity in November against Richards Bay. In the five matches since his return, Chiefs have lost just once, securing two wins and two draws.
Chiefs have shown progress offensively, scoring 14 goals in their first 10 matches. This makes them the third-highest scorers in the top eight, behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Comparatively, they had only netted 11 goals at this point last season. However, defensive issues remain glaring, with 13 goals conceded—the worst record in the top eight. Despite bolstering their defense with signings like Miguel Inacio, Rushwin Dortley, and Bradley Cross, their defensive stats have not improved.
Chiefs’ goalkeeping woes continue
The goalkeeping position remains unsettled at Naturena. Fiacre Ntwari, signed in pre-season, started as the number one but suffered an injury during international duty. Brandon Petersen struggled to claim the top spot, and Bruce Bvuma has taken over in the last two matches. Ntwari’s early performances raised concerns, leaving Nabi with no clear choice for a consistent goalkeeper.
Chiefs’ new additions have yet to make a significant impact. Defenders Miguel Inacio and Rushwin Dortley are still seeking consistency, while Bradley Cross has been inconsistent at left-back. Fiacre Ntwari’s injury and early struggles have hampered his contributions. Meanwhile, Gaston Sirino’s off-field issues and Njabulo Blom’s dip in form have added to the challenges. Bongani Sam remains sidelined without an appearance.
Away form a growing concern
Kaizer Chiefs’ struggles away from home continue to be a challenge. In six away matches, they have secured only two wins and dropped a total of 10 points. This inconsistency on the road is a pressing issue Nabi must address moving forward.
As the season progresses, Nabi faces the task of solidifying his defence, resolving the goalkeeping dilemma, and extracting consistent performances from his new signings. With young stars like Shabalala and Duba stepping up, Chiefs have a foundation to build on, but there’s still much work to be done to achieve long-term success.
