Despite the involvement of Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr in player recruitment, Maliwa’s arrival promises significant improvements in operations at Naturena. Sources close to the club reveal that Maliwa will collaborate closely with both Motaung and Head Coach Nasreddine Nabi, who retains the final say in most scouting decisions.
Enhancing the scouting process
Maliwa’s primary responsibility is to identify players who fit seamlessly into the Kaizer Chiefs culture and system, replicating his success at Sundowns. This new structure is designed to bring back the glory days of Amakhosi.
“The way it’s set up, it will help the team so much,” explained a source. “The Head of Scouting knows the kind of players the team is looking at, and the head coach has players he is looking at. They will sit down and agree on which players fit the culture and system of the club before making signings. At least now, there is someone dedicated to scouting players for the club.”
Previously, player recommendations often came from agents or intermediaries. Now, with Maliwa at the helm, the process has become more proactive and efficient, allowing the technical team to make informed decisions.
Sporting Director’s expanding role
The Sporting Director’s responsibilities extend beyond recruitment; he also oversees player contracts and salaries. Another source emphasised, “You have to understand that the Sporting Director has more work when the players are at the club rather than during recruitment. He has to manage their contracts, salaries, and other logistics. His role is crucial in running the team. So he collaborates closely with the head of scouting to recruit the best players that the technical team approves.”
