Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Thuso Phala says the club should prioritize a top-eight finish this season.
Amakhosi had a 2023/24 campaign to forget and are now looking to rebuild under Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian mentor started his tenure on a high winning his opening two matches. His next four matches saw him only picking up just one win which has now left the club in eight in the Betway Premiership.
Speaking to SoccerBeat, Phala said Kaizer Chiefs’ lack of experienced players have cost them in the past. The retired footballer believes Nabi is on the right track but a lot of work is needed to get the club back on track.
“It’s very unfortunate that the club lost experienced players at one go. The new crop players who took over just had too much to do and couldn’t deal with pressure.
Kaizer Chiefs only won once in their last four matches
“Since the new coach came in with new ideas, it has been a better season. We not saying they are having a good season because Chiefs just lost 4-0 to Sundowns, so it showed that we still have a lot of work to do. They exposed Chiefs to prove to them that they were not there yet.
“A reality for the fans is that we still have a long way to go,” Phala added.
The former SuperSport United star says Kaizer Chiefs will not fight for the title this season. Having crashed out of the Carling Knockout Cup, The Glamour Boys have the league and Nedbank Cup to fight for still but Phala suggests the focus should be on finishing inside the top eight.
“Realistically, top eight. I Think Chiefs’ priority is making the top eight. They had a mega start which will give them a boost for the rest of the season,” he said.
