Kaizer Chiefs icon Itumeleng Khune may have shot himself in the foot by venturing into business with betting company Top Bet.

Just last week, Khune announced that he had bought shares at Top Bet, and that he will be serving as their ambassador.

The business move was applauded by many but it may have serious consequences if Khune still wants to be part of Chiefs.

Khune spent 25 years as a junior and senior team player at Chiefs, and last season marked his final year with the club.

In June 2023, Chiefs said in a statement that Khune, 37, would be welcomed to stay in a non-playing position if he wished.

However, the legendary goalkeeper was just not ready to retire – and in September, Jessica Motaung confirmed ongoing talks with Khune.

Those talks, though, haven’t yielded anything concrete, and Khune has since ventured into business.

It is worth noting that Khune is yet to publicly reveal whether or not he aims to retire from professional football any time soon.

HOW KHUNE MAY HAVE COST HIMSELF THE KAIZER CHIEFS JOB

Now, the door open for Khune’s return to Naturena either as a player or non-player my have been shut last week.

And that’s because Chiefs are sponsored by SuperSportBet who are a direct competition to Khune’s Top Bet company.

Now, should Chiefs decide to re-hire Khune in whatever capacity, there would definitely be a conflict of interest.

Furthermore, FIFA rules prohibit players, coaches, club officials, referees and agents from being associated with betting companies.

This is to safeguard the integrity of the game as much as possible, and Khune’s association with Top Bet rules him out of any job at Chiefs or any other club.
