Kaizer Chiefs eyeing Bafana defender

Kaizer Chiefs are in hot pursuit of Stellenbosch star Fawaaz Basadien.

The dynamic defender has become one of Hugo Broos’ most consistently chosen disciples, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.

This won’t be the first time AmaKhosi has eyed the Cape Winelands enforcer, increasing their initial bid of R10 million to R13 million.

While a move to Kaizer Chiefs is likely to intrigue any PSL player, Basadien may feel it’s right to stay put as Stellenbosch continue their impressive rise, finishing third last season, missing out on CAF Champions League qualification to Orlando Pirates on goal-difference, and well on course to mimic similar results this campaign.

“I mean I’m there to do a job, never mind what’s going on around the media,” Basadien confirmed.

“Obviously, it’s good to have a club like Chiefs interested in you but I’m contracted to Stellenbosch and my focus has been there by Stellenbosch and just to put in good performances, week in and week out.”

Velebayi speaks ambitions

Another target of Kaizer Chiefs is Cape Town’s Asanele Velebayi, who is fast becoming one of Bafana’s most promising prospects.

The newly turned twenty-two year old spoke about his career aspirations:

“My peers, the likes of (Rushwin) Dortley, have done well. I don’t see what will stop me from reaching those levels or surpassing them. At the moment, I’m focused on my job at Cape Town Spurs, but that does not mean I don’t think about the future,” Velebayi reported to FARPost

“What I just avoid is losing focus and affecting my game. I can only pray that we emerge successful as a team. As an individual, I aim to break into Bafana Bafana. Seeing Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng makes me feel that as youngsters, we are not far.

“I believe that is a big platform for me. We all want to rise, but it’s a process. As a player, the goal is to grow and be a Bafana player. But when interests from bigger teams come, we must be able to deal with the level of attention,” he added.

“I envy what they (Mofokeng and Dortley) are doing at club and national team, and it is something that I also hope to do.”
