Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi clears the air on the Glody Makabi Lilepo debate.
The DR Congo international joined Amakhosi during the January transfer window from French third-tier side Valenciennes FC and has already made a strong impact. With three goals and one assist in just eight appearances, Lilepo has shown his attacking prowess, but his position on the field has been a hot topic.
Lilepo is a winger first, says Nabi
While many have debated whether Lilepo is a winger or a centre-forward, Nabi made it clear that his main position is out wide.
“I think the first position for him is a winger – right, left, but really, he is a winger,” said Nabi as quoted by FARPost.
“Sometimes in France, he played as a second striker at Valenciennes, but that’s not his first position.”
Despite being used primarily as a winger, Lilepo has showcased versatility, occasionally operating in a more central attacking role when needed.
Chiefs’ goal struggles frustrate Nabi
Following Kaizer Chiefs’ disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Town City in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium, Nabi did not hold back his frustration over missed chances.
“Today, in the last 20 minutes, we pushed [Pule] Mmodi on the winger, and we pushed more players into the 18 [area]. I think you observed it,” Nabi explained. “We continued to create more chances, but we couldn’t score. It’s not dramatic, but it’s very bad because it’s not the first time we have a chance to go up [the table], and we drop points.”
The Chiefs coach emphasized that the team keeps making the same mistakes, preventing them from capitalizing on opportunities to climb the league standings.
“If you remember, at the start of the season and now, the same mistakes are continuing. You have a chance to go up [the table], but you lose this chance,” he added.
“Sometimes you need evaluation on why and what is the problem because today, the normal score [could have been] 3-0 or 4-0.”
Chiefs must find their finishing touch
With Nabi openly frustrated over missed opportunities, the focus now shifts to how Chiefs can sharpen their attack. Lilepo has been a bright spot since arriving, but the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal if they want to turn their dominance into victories.
