Kaizer Chiefs appear to be edging closer to securing the services of Polokwane City’s standout winger Oswin Appollis, as first reported by The South African.
With transfer speculation heating up, Polokwane’s head coach Phuti Mohafe has broken his silence, all but confirming that key players will leave the club before the new season kicks off.
Mohafe confirms player exits are inevitable
Following Polokwane City’s impressive top-eight finish in the Betway Premiership, coach Mohafe addressed the media with a frank admission about upcoming departures in his squad. Although he refrained from naming names.
“That has been every team’s mandate or method to say, ‘we need to strengthen and you have to lose some’. You cannot bring in some and you still have a load of players who are still remaining in the team,” said Mohafe.
“And the speculation has been there so let them continue and I don’t want to mention names as to who and who are being touted. So let it be, whoever goes let him go, and whoever stays let him stay.”
His words have added weight to rumours linking Appollis with a blockbuster move to Naturena.
Source reveals talks between Chiefs and Appollis
A source has claimed that Kaizer Chiefs are deep in discussions to lure the 23-year-old winger to Soweto. Appollis, who was notably absent in Polokwane’s final clash of the season against Kaizer Chiefs, is believed to be on the verge of sealing the transfer.
“What we believe is that apparently the talks involving Appollis and Kaizer Chiefs are at an advanced stage. The Soweto giants could get the player from Polokwane City at the start of next season,” revealed the source.
Polokwane could still stand firm
Despite all signs pointing to an imminent exit, Appollis still has one year remaining on his contract, which runs until June 2026. Polokwane City could technically retain the winger. But Mohafe’s comments suggest the club might be open to cashing in before his value drops. Appollis featured in 28 matches across all competitions this past season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. In contrast, during the 2023/2024 campaign, he found the net seven times and delivered five assists.
