The mishap occurred after Amakhosi’s painful Soweto derby loss to Orlando Pirates, marking their 12th Betway Premiership defeat this season.
In response to a pointed question about his leadership and the club’s direction, Nabi fired back with a heated statement, defending his role amid growing pressure. The moment highlighted the increasing strain on the Chiefs coach as fans and critics question his impact.
Chiefs coach phone mix-up adds to drama
According to Phakaaathi, the drama didn’t end on the field or at the press conference.
“He took the phone all the way to Sandton with him,” a source revealed.
“They had to phone his driver before he realised what had happened.”
Nabi unknowingly took the journalist’s phone home to Sandton. Only after a call to his driver did he realize the error. The phone then had to be returned to FNB Stadium, where it was finally exchanged for the correct device.
Redemption on the horizon?
While the phone situation added an awkward twist to an already tough night, Nabi has one more chance to silence the critics. Kaizer Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates again this Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final in Durban.
