’Kaizer Chiefs are targeting the wrong player’

Several Kaizer Chiefs fans have expressed their scepticism about the club’s pursuit of a primary transfer target.

Chiefs fans aren’t sold on Mayele

Congolese striker Fiston Mayele has been a long-standing target for Chies but fans aren’t convinced that the transfer fee and wages are justified. The board would need to shell out a figure north of R20 million and pay the 30-year-old a handsome wage in line with that fee. The Pyramids FC striker will turn 31 in June.

Increased budget for the Kaizer Chiefs board?

According to Soccer-Laduma, Chiefs have more money to spend than was initially thought.

“They know that without a proper budget, they won’t get the right players they want for the team to do well and change the fortunes. That’s why they are believed to be considering raising the current budget to R100m. At the start of the season, they had a R60m budget and it didn’t bring them the players they wanted. They believe the R100m will make a big difference in negotiating and buying the players they want,” said a source.

Is Wandile Duba the solution to their problems, right in front of their eyes?

When he scored a screamer to open his account for the club as a teenager against Golden Arrows, we knew that something special was brewing. Fast-forward to 2024-2025 and Duba scored a brace to help Chiefs to a much-needed 2-1 win over Stellenbosch on Wednesday night. Chiefs have prepared a new contract for the impressive youngster and it’s easy to see why. His versatility as a wide attacker or an option through the middle makes him a key component of Nasreddine Nabi’s rebuild.

Dream Amakhosi XI with a few shiny new signings

Meanwhile, Chiefs have been linked with a host of exciting names. This is a hypothetical XI with a few brand new players.

Ntwari; Cele, Miguel, Dortley, BasadienVacaLe Roux; Duba, Shabalala, AppollisMayele.

This hypothetical XI would see regular midfield hardman Thabo Cele shifted out to right back to accommodate Ramiro Vaca and Le Roux in a midfield pivot. Wandile Duba could form a fruitful creative relationship alongside fellow academy talent and fan favourite Mduduzi Shabalala. Oswin Appollis is the man all Chiefs fans want; the Polokwane and Bafana winger would be their dream signing. Prolific Congolese marksman Fiston Mayele is no stranger to finding the back of the net. Vaca is a midfield maestro capable of supplying chances for a number 9.

Will Chiefs continue to chase Mayele or is there another striker they should target?
