Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema said he was ‘happy’ that the Government of National Unity (GNU) was ‘collapsing’.
The Parliament has approved the 2025/26 National Budget. The African National Congress (ANC) and several other political parties voted in favor of the budget, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) and a few others opposed it.
The EFF also voted against the budget, with leader Julius Malema stating that this decision demonstrated that the Government of National Unity (GNU) was not functioning effectively.
“I’m happy that we were able to prove to South Africans that there is nothing called the GNU, it collapsed in front of us,” Malema said.
“We said this will last for a year. Today, everybody saw what we have been speaking about. So, we are happy that we were able to demonstrate in action that there is nothing common about so called Government of National Unity.”
Julius Malema waiting for ‘the right time’ to enter GNU
Last year, Malema said his party was ready to enter government but was waiting patiently for the DA and ANC to have a fallout.
“If he is not going now, he will be removed in 2027. They will be new leader of the ANC. The person who is going to be elected is a person who is going to fight GNU, and that is why we are saying it will not last,” the EFF leader added.
Julius Malema said it was just a matter of time before the ANC and DA’s relationship to collapse, thus creating an opportunity for his party to join the GNU.
“Everywhere else it is being rejected, but people keep on imposing it on members of the ANC, so don’t rush comrades, we are waiting, we are going to enter this government. We are just waiting, you will see.”
“We are waiting. We are going to enter this thing of government, we are just waiting. When they start fighting with Helen Zille, siyangena (we are entering).”
Should DA leave GNU?
