Jose Riveiro on what Pirates are doing differently this season

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has explained how his side has had a better start to the season compared to the previous campaigns.

The 49-year-old Spaniard joined the Buccaneers in 2022 and has since won five trophies with the Soweto giants. Having enjoyed success in cup competitions, Riveiro has not lost out on the league to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Things appear to be changing this season with Masandawana finding it difficult in the cup competitions and league so far. Under coach Manqoba Mngqithi, the Brazilians have lost three times across all competitions this campaign.

Orlando Pirates have won six Betway Premiership in a row but Riveiro is not getting carried away. Following the team’s recent 2-0 win over TS Galaxy, the Spaniard said his team still needed to improve.

“There’s a lot of things to refine, like you saw today [Tuesday], we were not better than Galaxy in some moments of the game, where we were dominated as well but we managed again to pull ourselves,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV.

“One more time I think the people were incredible, pushing us, in the moments we were struggling a little bit and together we have managed to have a fantastic beginning of the season, something that we were crying for in the previous two [seasons].

Riveiro happy with Pirates league form

“So now it’s time to find the spaces where we can still do things better, which is not always possible in football and consolidate the good job we did in the beginning of the season.”

The Buccaneers are in action next week against Richards Bay. Riveiro has a squad good enough to win the league and with Downs struggling in some games, this might be Pirates’ season.

Can the Buccaneers clain the league title?
