FlySafair launches new route in SA

Travelling from Johannesburg to George just got a bit easier, now that low-cost airline, FlySafair has launched flights between Lanseria International Airport and George Airport.

As reported by BusinessTech, flights officially kicked off on Friday, 14 March, operating daily.

Departing flights leave Lanseria at 10:10 in the morning, arriving at George at 12:20, while flights depart George at 12:55 and arrive at Lanseria at 14:55.

“We’re now flying between Lanseria and George, so if you fancy going from city buzz to coastal bliss (or vice versa), we’re making your travels easier than ever with daily flights between these two unique destinations, from just R1162.” FlySafair said in a post on X.

The innaugural flight, which landed at George Airport on Friday, was received with a traditional water salute and much celebration.

Operations continue

In other recent news from FlySafair, the airline recently confirmed that it will continue operating flights without any disruption following a recent “non-compliant” ruling by the Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC).

According to Travel News, it was also revealed that the ASLC has now given the airline 12 months to comply, with monthly progress reports requested as well.

This comes after the South African International Air Services Council (IASC) received formal complaints from both Airlink and LIFT Airline back in February 2022, and found that FlySafair’s shareholding structure contravened South African law, which places a limit on foreign ownership of domestic airlines at 25%.

FlySafair was therefore found in violation of this law, as it is primarily controlled by Ireland-based ASL Aviation Holdings, which directly holds a 25% stake and indirectly owns 49,86% (via the Safair Investment Trust). This then brings ASL’s total ownership to 74,86%, largely exceeding the legal foreign ownership limit.

DO YOU THINK FLYSAFAIR WILL MEET COMPLIANCE REGULATIONS IN 12 MONTHS?
