ANC veteran and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coordinator Jeff Radebe is furious with the province’s councillors for failing to do their jobs, leaving over R7.5 billion unspent.
Radebe says their incompetence is depriving people of essential services.
“About R2.6 billion that have not been used by useless councillors. What does that mean?” he asked.
In the 2023/2024 financial year, eight major municipalities in KZN failed to use R7.5 billion from their adjusted budgets, including R2.6 billion set aside for capital projects.
Radebe warned that the ANC task team will hold these officials accountable and urged underperforming councillors to step aside.
“What does this mean? It means that our people here in KZN are deprived by useless councillors of not spending budgets that have been appropriated in law, dealing a major blow to service delivery. That will come to an end under our leadership here,” he said.
Radebe was recently appointed to lead the ANC’s interim provincial structure alongside Mike Mabuyakhulu, former KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and spokesperson Fanle Sibisi.
Several municipalities, including Msunduzi, uThukela, and eThekwini, are struggling with financial mismanagement, service delivery failures, and water shortages.
Audits have exposed widespread corruption, irregular spending, and a lack of accountability, forcing the provincial government to step in at times.
Msunduzi has received a negative audit due to irregular and wasteful spending, while uThukela has faced protests over its crumbling infrastructure and ongoing water crisis. In eThekwini, residents in some areas rely on unhygienic wells for water.
Other struggling municipalities include King Cetshwayo, uMzinyathi, Amajuba, and Harry Gwala, with some overspending but achieving little. Abaqulusi, Inkosi Langalibalele, Nquthu, uMkhanyakude, and Mtubatuba have also performed poorly in nearly every category.
The impact on residents has been devastating, with many left without basic services such as water, sanitation, and proper infrastructure.
