Is this the OFFICIAL end to Khune and Kaizer Chiefs 25-year relationship?

Kaizer Chiefs have issued a response regarding Itumeleng Khune and his future at the club.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper’s contract with Amakhosi expired in June, and he has not played football since then. Earlier this month, the former Bafana Bafana star announced that he has become a shareholder in the betting company Topbet.

Kaizer Chiefs has indicated that Khune was offered a non-playing role following his ‘retirement.’ However, his current position could present a conflict of interest, as the Soweto giants also collaborate with SuperSportBet.

“As a club we are certainly reviewing the situation,” said Amakhosi’s Marketing Director Jessica Motaung said as per Sunday World.

“We have been in discussions with Itu about the way forward and the new dynamics need to be looked at holistically.

Itu Khune might not go back to Kaizer Chiefs

“But regardless of what happens through the discussions, Itu will always be part of the family – he is a legend in our team and someone we will always have a relationship with. Itu will always be part of the Kaizer Chiefs family, and he can be with us in many capacities,” Motaung added.

“So, in the meantime, we will sit on the drawing board and chat with him about the way forward.”

It remains to be seen if the club still has a role for the former bafana number one keeper. Having left Kaizer Chiefs, Khune has indicted that he still wants to play football. It is unlikely that he would play for a professional team given FIFA’s rules with players and betting companies.

Should Khune return to the field or must he just retire?
