The SASSA grant for assisted living is aimed at existing recipients who require extra resources for full-time care at home. Also, beneficiaries should note that the full amount does not apply if you are in a state-sponsored facility. SASSA Grant-in-Aid increased back in April 2024 by R20. Therefore, it pays an additional R530 atop an existing Older Persons, War Veterans or Disability grant. So, with the SASSA grant for assisted living in 2024:

  • Older Persons (75 +): R2 210 + R530 = R2 740
  • Older Persons (60 – 74): R2 190 + R530 = R2 720
  • War Veterans: R2 190 + R530 = R2 720
  • Disabled: R2 190 + R530 = R2 720

YOU REQUIRE A SASSA MEDICAL ASSESSMENT

However, to be granted a SASSA grant for assisted living, you need a SASSA-appointed assessor to gauge if you need full-time care at home. The main criteria for this is assessment is based on mental or physical disability. However, grant recipients have been accused of submitting fraudulent assessments to SASSA. Likewise, there has been criticism over the state-appointed assessors, saying they deny a high percentage of Grant-in-Aid applications.

Furthermore, assessment reports are only valid for three months and Grant-in-Aid applications often take longer to process than that. Which comes with its own bureaucratic confusion. Nevertheless, if approved after three months, you will be paid your funds retroactively.
