WHO IS BOTSWANA’S NEW PRESIDENT?

The newly elected Botswana president Duma Boko is a human rights lawyer who is married to Kaone Boko.

Botswana Youth confirms that Duma was born in Mahalapye, a small village in Botswana.

Social media user @JosephKgangyame reveals: “He is from a village called Mahalapye. That village has a ward called Xhosa. Maybe he’s from that ward. There are pockets of Xhosa people in different parts of Botswana. My Grandma’s young sister married in a Xhosa speaking village in Botswana. I have Xhosa relatives here & in SA.”

Boko holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Botswana and a Master of Laws (LLM) from Harvard Law School, where he specialised in constitutional and human rights law.

Boko’s wife was born and raised in Lobatse; a town known for its historic significance in Botswana. She also studied law and earned her degree at the University of Botswana.

The 54-year-old Harvard graduate replaces outgoing president Mokgweetsi Masisi.
