The continent of Africa could soon receive a boost of assistance in its film and television industry as British actor Idris Elba announced his plans to relocate to Africa.
The 52-year-old could easily be considered one of the world’s most talented actors in modern times – this is due to his ability to seamlessly transition into whatever role given to him and owning the role of his characters.
This has led to his featuring in many of the world’s top films including Takers, The Fast and the Furious, as well as mzansi’s very own Long Walk to Freedom, playing the role of former South African president, Nelson Mandela in 2013.
In one of his latest films, Idris returned to South Africa where he headed to Limpopo, Cape Town and Namibia for filming of his action movie, Beast.
It appears that the actor who is also a talented DJ, has seen potential during his time in Africa and now wants to stay so he can help in providing a much-needed boost in the local film industry.
In a recent interview with BBC Idris, who is originally of African descent with a mother from Ghana and a father from Sierra Leone – says that it is vital that Africans start telling their own stories.
“I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen,” he said from a meeting in Accra.
“I think I’ll move in the next five, 10 years, God willing. I’m here to bolster the film industry – that is a 10-year process – I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in the country, on the continent.”
He further revealed plans to build a film studio in both Ghana and Zanzibar and says he will live in various parts of the continent, to better understand the people in those regions.
