Durban business tycoon, Kgolo ‘Da Guru’ Mthembu recently took to Mo and Phindi’s podcast to lay his soul bare, and share how he hit rock bottom, alcoholism his separation with his wife and finding his feet.

Kgolo who is married to Real Housewives star, Annie Mthembu shared the heart-wrenching details of how he lost his eight businesses and his unborn baby on their traditional wedding weekend. Reflecting on what he went through, Da Guru shared that his company was looted during the KwaZulu-Natal riots.

“I’m a broken man,” Da Guru confessed in an interview with Mo and Phindi, reflecting on a list of personal failures that affected his marriage with Annie; he revealed that he made the call of pulling out of Real Housewives, because he felt like a lot was placed on the spotlight, and they were giving power to the public to control their relationship.

“We gave people power to control our relationship. But I cannot blame the show,” he said, admitting the spotlight took a toll.

He also shared that Annie suspected that something was wrong with their unborn baby, and said she could not feel the heart beat of the baby. As a man of faith, he brushed the feeling off because he believed that God would not let something like that happen to them on their special weekend. However, things turned for the worst when Annie gave birth to a stillborn.

“She told me she couldn’t feel the baby’s heart beating. But I brushed it off as anxiety and excitement. I’m a man of faith. I said, ‘God will never put us through that on our wedding weekend. We can’t lose our son after three miscarriages already’. We buried our son that Sunday,” he shared.

Da Guru shared that he drank alcohol for two years when Covid-19 struck, hw said he felt like the world was ending, and thought he should enjoy one last time.

“I asked myself if this was the end of the world. I said, ‘Let me enjoy for the last time,’ I didn’t take accountability. And I was drinking every day for two years, trying to escape. I’m not sure if I was eating, but I know I drank. It’s like I was trying to kill myself, but I couldn’t die.”

He shared that he later went to rehab, and paid R70 000 monthly for him to relapse.
