In this day and age, the digital world has the power to influence our respectful careers, as companies do a background check before offering you a deal.

This means that one needs to always be vigilant of the content one posts and share on social media as this impacts your career in either good or bad ways.

Where social media have become more about personal branding than having fun it is important to understand and treat the platform as your office and not post incriminating content. It is also important to understand that first impressions last and in the workspace it’s important to always be professional at all times.

Speaking to CEO Magazine, Founder of The Marque, Andrew Wessels stated, “Previously, you would make your first impression with a handshake but in this digital age, and with remote working the norm, first impressions are made by whatever it is that a search engine chooses to serve up.”

More like your carbon footprint, your digital footprint can track the type of content you post and with the advancement of technologies to track the content you delete.

While it remains important to have a good digital footprint, Andrew adds that when prospective companies see that you don’t have a social media presence it does become a red flag to them as they have no way of tracking you digitally, as an employee.

  1. Delete any inappropriate or unprofessional content.
  2.  Be aware of what you put online, especially on social media.
  3. Think about how potential employers would see your posts.
  4. Use professional language and tone while speaking online, particularly with future employers or coworkers.
