New year, new leave! Here’s how to turn 20 days off annual leave into 47 days off using the public holidays in 2025.

ALL THE SOUTH AFRICAN PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN 2025

South Africans will have 12 public holidays this year. These are:

  • 1 January: New Year’s Day
  • 21 March: Human Rights Day
  • 18 April: Good Friday 
  • 21 April: Family Day
  • 27 April: Freedom Day (Sunday). So Freedom Day to be observed on 28 April.
  • 1 May: Workers’ Day
  • 16 June: Youth Day
  • 9 August: National Women’s Day
  • 24 September: Heritage Day
  • 16 December: Day of Reconciliation
  • 25 December: Christmas Day
  • 26 December: Day of Goodwill

HOW TO GET 47 DAYS OFF WITH 20 DAYS LEAVE

The 47 days off include weekends and public holidays. Here’s how:

  • Human Rights weekend into a long weekend – Take leave on Monday 24 March = Four days off.
  • Easter weekend – Take 22, 23, 24 and 25 April of leave = 11 days off.
  • Youth Day weekend – Take 12, 13 and 17 June of leave = six days off.
  • Heritage Day – Take 17, 18, 19, 22, 23 September off = Eight days off.
  • End of year – Take 15, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24 December off = 16 days off.
