How much Kaizer Chiefs top target will cost in January

Oswin Appollis is one of the hottest properties in SA football and Kaizer Chiefs still have genuine interest in the Bafana man. How much would he cost?

Oswin Appollis is a full Bafana Bafana international approaching his prime

Having scored a brace in a crunch qualifying win over South Sudan, Appollis’ stock is as high as it’s ever been. He’s just recently turned 23 too, meaning he’s potentially not even close to his prime. That would push his value up. Appollis bagged six goals and three assists from 29 league appearances last term for Polokwane.

Buyers at the market

Someone of the magnitude of Kaizer Chiefs can offer Appollis a better salary and terms than lesser sides in the division. Chiefs can probably pay a better monthly wage to Appollis than most of the biggest sides in the North of the continent. Another factor that Polokwane City would consider, should they decide to sell their star man on the final day of the window or the day before, is the desperation Chiefs have to acquire a player of his profile. The closer we get to the window, the more panicky Chiefs get, and the higher the price skyrockets. And if a buyer like Sundowns arrived at the table? Then Chiefs can forget about it and Polokwane can drive the price even higher than before.

Appollis has a unique profile

Oswin Appollis is a rare type of player in South Africa, with a low centre of gravity and the ability to go both ways when confronted by a marker near the touchline. His rare combination of traits makes him a highly coveted operator.

Estimated fee Kaizer Chiefs might need to cough up

Elias Mokwana, Khanyisa Mayo and Iqraam Rayners are other South African attackers who’ve made big moves either abroad or within the Betway Premiership. Mokwana moved to Esperance for 370k (R7.2 million), Rayners switched to Sundowns for an undisclosed fee although his estimated transfer value now stands at R35 million (evidence of the power Sundowns have over the market) and Mayo is in Algeria with Belouizdad in a deal which cost his new employers €750k (R14.5 million). Now, Mayo’s value according to transfermarkt is double the price that Cape Town City recouped for the striker. Appollis could easily and justifiably fetch a bigger fee than all three.

This isn’t an exhaustive list of factors, but most of the biggest ones are there. It would be no real shock if Polokwane held out for something around R20 million for Appollis.
